3 Daily Fantasy Baseball Players to Avoid on 9/20/19

Pete Alonso faces the hard-throwing Luis Castillo tonight. Does that mean we should be avoiding him?

While we have plenty of pieces geared towards guys you should target in your DFS contests, it's also important to narrow down your shortlist of plays and avoid the suboptimal ones who are overpriced and/or in tough spots.

Let's check out three guys to consider fading on tonight's FanDuel main slate.

Mike Minor, P, Texas Rangers

FanDuel Price: $8.900

After dealing with a plethora of injuries for several years, Mike Minor has reestablished himself with the Texas Rangers since joining the team before the 2018 season. This season, Minor has a career-high 4.2 WAR and a solid 4.08 FIP. Despite his success this year, Minor finds himself in a tough spot against the Oakland Athletics who are trying to lock up a wild card spot. The A's have the fifth-best wRC+ against lefties at 113 and the third-lowest strikeout rate at 19.4%.

While on the surface Minor seems like a quality mid-priced pitching option, he should be left on the bench. Consider Mike Foltynewicz ($7,700) who seems to have fixed his early season woes.

Pete Alonso, 1B, New York Mets

FanDuel Price: $3,900

Pete Alonso has had a record-breaking rookie season for the New York Mets. The polar bear has already hit 49 home runs, a national league rookie record, while hitting for a 147 wRC+. As he continues the chase towards Aaron Judge's rookie record of 52 home runs, Alonso can seem like an appealing play.

However, with a tough matchup against Luis Castillo, who has held righties to a lowly .247 wOBA, Alonso should be avoided. Freddie Freeman ($3,900) can be had at the same price yet has a better matchup and has averaged more points per game than Alonso.

Didi Gregorius, SS, New York Yankees

FanDuel Price: $3,500

After coming back midseason from Tommy John surgery, Didi Gregorius has had some struggles at the plate. Luckily for him, his stats have been boosted by having tons of chances in the middle of the New York Yankees lineup. Additionally, since September 10th Gregorious has been more disciplined with an 11.1% walk rate which has led to more success at the dish. Gregorius takes on righty Jacob Waguespack and his .499 FIP, tonight in the Bronx.

Although the rookie pitcher has struggled, he does have reverse splits, holding lefties to a .279 wOBA. With several quality options at the position in the same price range, Gregorius is not worth a start tonight. Pivot to hot-hitting Kevin Newman in his matchup against the Milwaukee Brewers.
